Windows 11: New Taskbar Speed Test & More! (Release Preview Update) (2026)

Microsoft has unveiled exciting new updates for Windows 11 Insiders, offering a sneak peek into the future of their operating system. But here's where it gets controversial... some of these features might just revolutionize your computing experience!

The Release Preview Build, KB5077241, brings a range of improvements and fixes, split into two categories: gradual rollout and normal rollout.

For starters, let's talk about the taskbar. A built-in network speed test has been added, allowing users to quickly check their internet connection speed right from the taskbar. No more guessing or opening multiple tabs!

And this is the part most people miss: when your taskbar is set to 'uncombined', the overflow area now behaves more intelligently. Only the specific windows that don't fit will move to the overflow, instead of the entire group.

Microsoft has also expanded its Windows Backup for Organizations, introducing a first sign-in restore flow. This feature automatically restores user settings and Microsoft Store apps on supported enterprise scenarios, including Entra hybrid-joined devices, Cloud PCs, and multi-user environments.

Other notable changes include an updated Start menu account menu, which now links to the Microsoft account benefits page, and support for setting .webp files as desktop wallpaper.

File Explorer gets an 'extract all' command bar option when browsing non-ZIP archive folders, and there are reliability improvements for the Network page.

Display-related work has also been done to improve resume performance and docked-laptop resume behavior.

So, what do you think? Are these updates a step in the right direction for Windows 11? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
